Moss and Glow Lichen in Minecraft
Moss blocks cover lush caves; bone meal on moss spreads it across stone, dirt and deepslate around it, with grass, azaleas and moss carpets on top, which makes moss a great bone meal farm. Glow lichen grows on cave walls, gives light level 7 and only drops when cut with shears; bone meal spreads it to nearby surfaces.
How does moss spread?
- Use bone meal on a moss block: it turns nearby stone, dirt, deepslate, tuff and similar blocks with air above into moss, in a 7×11×7 area.
- Some new moss grows grass, azaleas or moss carpets.
- One bone meal makes on average about 27 moss blocks on a flat area, and composting them gives back more bone meal than you spent.
- Mine moss fastest with a hoe; pistons pop it off as an item.
Composting: bone meal and composters.
What is moss good for?
Bone meal farms, decoration, and planting: every plant except cactus can go on moss, mushrooms in light 12 or less, and small dripleaf without water. Sniffer eggs hatch twice as fast on moss. Wandering traders sell 2 moss blocks for an emerald. See sniffers.
What is glow lichen?
- A thin glowing plant on cave walls and ceilings, on stone, deepslate, ores, dripstone and more.
- Gives light level 7; see light sources.
- Only shears collect it; anything else breaks it with no drop.
- Bone meal spreads it to a neighbouring surface.
- Water and lava cannot break it, but it burns.
Where do they grow?
Moss fills lush caves along with azaleas, spore blossoms and dripleaf; glow lichen appears in caves at any height. See lush caves.
