The latest full Java Edition release is 26.3, Wilderness Bound, released on 15 September 2026; 26.4 is in development for the fourth quarter of 2026. Below is every recent version with its date and what it added.

What is the latest Minecraft version?

As of 23 October 2026, minecraft.wiki lists 26.3 (Wilderness Bound), released on 15 September 2026, as the newest full Java Edition release. The next one, 26.4, entered development on 22 September 2026 and is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026; it adds ice caves, the frostbite and the Freezing effect.

minecraft.wiki calls 1.21.2 and the main releases after it "game drops" (hotfixes such as 1.21.3 aside), with several drops a year instead of one big yearly update. A new version format, year.drop.hotfix, was announced in December 2025, and 26.1 (March 2026) was the first release to use it: 26 is the year, the second number is the drop, and a third number marks a hotfix.

How do Minecraft version numbers work now?

Up to the end of 2025, Java Edition used 1.x numbers: 1.21 was Tricky Trials and its game drops became 1.21.2, 1.21.4, 1.21.5 and so on, with hotfixes in between. From 2026 the first number is the year. 26.1 is the first drop of 2026, 26.2 the second, 26.3 the third, and a hotfix adds a third number, as in 26.1.1 and 26.1.2.

26.1 was also the first release to need Java 25 and the first to ship fully unobfuscated, without an obfuscated variant alongside it.

Which old versions still matter?

Two older versions still shape multiplayer. 1.8 (the Bountiful Update, 2 September 2014) is the last version before the combat rework, and minecraft.wiki still keeps a separate PvP tutorial for 1.8 next to modern Java and Bedrock PvP. 1.9 (the Combat Update, 29 February 2016) added the attack cooldown, shields and dual wielding. When is the next Minecraft update?

The next Java Edition drop is 26.4, which minecraft.wiki lists as the Fourth Drop of 2026, planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. See Minecraft 26.4 for what it adds so far.

Which versions can join ArtemisPvP?
