Mace: How to Get It and Smash Attack Damage
The mace is crafted from a heavy core (only from ominous vaults in trial chambers) and a breeze rod. Hit something after falling at least 1.5 blocks and you do a smash attack: +4 damage per block for the first 3 blocks, +2 for the next 5, +1 after that, with no fall damage for you.
How do you get a mace?
Craft a heavy core with a breeze rod. The heavy core is rare: it only comes from ominous vaults in trial chambers, opened with ominous trial keys from ominous trial spawners. Breeze rods drop from breezes, which also live in trial chambers. See 1.21 Tricky Trials for how trial chambers work.
How much damage does a mace smash attack do?
A smash attack happens when you hit while falling at least 1.5 blocks, whatever your attack cooldown, as long as you are not on the ground or (on Java) flying with elytra. Landing it cancels the fall damage you had built up.
| Fall height | Extra damage |
|---|---|
| First 3 blocks | +4 HP per block |
| Next 5 blocks (3 to 8) | +2 HP per block |
| Every block after 8 | +1 HP per block |
So a 3-block fall adds 12 damage and an 8-block fall adds 22. Every hit, smash or not, costs 1 durability.
What are the best mace enchantments?
- Density (I-V): adds damage per block fallen, 0.5 per level.
- Breach (I-IV): lowers the target's armour effectiveness by 15% per level. Density and Breach cannot share a mace.
- Wind Burst (I-III): launches you 8 blocks per level back up after a smash, so you can chain smashes; unlike a wind charge it does not cancel fall damage.

Is the mace used in PvP?
Yes: minecraft.wiki lists Mace PvP as its own kit type, built on maces and wind charges in high-power gear, with variants using elytra or spears. Techniques such as stun-slamming (an axe hit to stun a shield, then a smash) come from it. See every PvP kit.
