Llamas in Minecraft: Taming, Chests and Caravans
Llamas live in savanna plateaus and windswept hills. Tame one by riding it until hearts appear, put a chest on it for 3 to 15 slots depending on its strength, and decorate it with a carpet. Lead one llama and up to nine others follow in a caravan. They spit for 1 damage when attacked, and you cannot steer them.
How do you tame a llama?
With an empty hand, mount it over and over until hearts appear. Feeding it wheat or hay bales helps. Llamas cannot be saddled or steered, so they are pack animals rather than mounts; for riding see horses.
How much can a llama carry?
| Strength | Chest slots |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3 |
| 2 | 6 |
| 3 | 9 |
| 4 | 12 |
| 5 | 15 |
Strength is random at spawn and passed on through breeding: a baby gets a strength from 1 up to its stronger parent's, with a small chance of a bonus. Breed tamed llamas with hay bales.
How do llama caravans work?
Attach a lead to one llama and up to 9 nearby llamas line up behind it. With chests on all of them, that is a lot of storage on a trip. Each leashed llama can lead its own caravan. Leads: leads.
What about trader llamas?
Wandering traders arrive with two trader llamas, which act like llamas and defend the trader. Once you unleash one from the trader it can be tamed on Java and is tamed at once on Bedrock, and it no longer despawns; see wandering trader. Llamas also scare off wolves: wolves flee strong llamas. Decorate with any carpet; see carpets.
Frequently asked questions
