Lightning Rods in Minecraft: Protect Your Base
A lightning rod (3 copper ingots) attracts natural lightning within 128 blocks on Java (64 on Bedrock) so it strikes the rod instead of your wooden base or your animals. When struck it gives a redstone signal and, if not waxed, has all its oxidation removed. It must be the highest block in its column with nothing above it.
How does a lightning rod work?
- Craft it from 3 copper ingots in a vertical line; mine it with a stone pickaxe or better.
- During thunderstorms, natural lightning in range hits the rod instead of the spot it would have hit.
- It must have nothing above it (any block on Java, any block with collision on Bedrock).
- A Channeling trident thrown at it during a storm also calls lightning down on it.
Weather: weather and lightning.
Why build lightning rods?
- Stop fires in wooden buildings and forests.
- Protect villagers (lightning turns them into witches), pigs (zombified piglins) and other mobs.
- Or make lightning on purpose: charged creepers and mooshroom color changes come from strikes (strikes on rods never make skeleton traps); see creepers.
Does a lightning rod oxidize?
Yes, through 4 stages like other copper blocks. An axe scrapes off one stage and lightning removes all of it, and honeycomb waxes it to keep its color. See copper and oxidation.
Can you use the redstone signal?
Yes: a struck rod gives a short signal, which you can use to count storms or trigger a contraption. See redstone inputs.
