How to Make and Use a Lead in Minecraft

How do you get a lead?

• Craft: 5 string makes 2 leads (older versions used 4 string and a slimeball).
• Wandering traders bring 2 trader llamas on leads: kill the trader or break the link and you keep the leads.
• Some chests, such as woodland mansions and ancient cities, can hold leads.

How do you use a lead?

• Use it on a mob to leash it; each mob needs its own lead.
• Sneak and use a fence to tie every leashed mob there; the mob stays within about 5 blocks of the post.
• Use the mob again, or shears, to unleash it. Hitting the knot drops the leads.
• If you walk into a Nether portal and back out, the lead stays on the mob.
• Boats can be leashed and towed, and a happy ghast can carry a leashed boat; see happy ghast.

Which mobs can you put on a lead?

Most animals and some neutral mobs: horses, donkeys, llamas, camels, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, wolves, cats, foxes, bees, axolotls, frogs, goats, iron and snow golems, allays, striders, hoglins, sniffers and more. You cannot leash villagers, wandering traders, pandas, turtles, bats or most monsters in normal play. Move villagers with boats, minecarts or water instead; see villagers.

Why does my lead keep breaking?

The mob got more than 12 blocks away, could not follow you (a wall or a gap), or something hit the lead: projectiles break it. Riding quickly also outruns many mobs. Walk slowly, keep a clear path and stay close. More on mounts: horses.
