Ladders and Scaffolding in Minecraft: How to Use Them

How do ladders work?

• Craft 3 ladders from 7 sticks. Place them on the side of any full block, never on top or bottom.
• Push against the wall to climb, or hold jump inside a 1×1 shaft; sneak to hold still.
• Grabbing a ladder while falling cancels all fall damage; see fall damage.
• Ladders push lava away and make air pockets in lava; underwater they become waterlogged.
• Mobs climb ladders in their path but do not use them on purpose.

How does scaffolding work?

• Craft 6 from 6 bamboo and 1 string; it breaks instantly and drops itself.
• Use it on the side of scaffolding to build up; use it on the top to extend sideways.
• Pieces more than 6 blocks from a supported column fall down.
• Jump to climb inside, sneak to walk down; standing on top is a platform.
• Falling onto scaffolding while sneaking resets your fall distance, so you take no fall damage.

Ladder or scaffolding?

Use ladders for permanent climbs in a base or mineshaft: cheap and space-saving. Use scaffolding while building something tall, then knock out the bottom block to clear it all at once. For fast long climbs, use a water elevator.

Are ladders used in PvP?

Yes: grabbing a ladder or vine cancels fall damage, which can save you after a knockback off a ledge. See Factions.
