Java vs Bedrock Redstone: Key Differences

Redstone works differently on Java and Bedrock, so many contraptions only work on one edition. Java has quasi-connectivity and cannot push chests with pistons; Bedrock pistons can move chests and most block entities, start after a fixed delay, and Bedrock observers react to any block update.

What is quasi-connectivity?

On Java Edition, pistons, sticky pistons, dispensers and droppers can be powered as if they were one block taller, so a signal next to the space above them can switch them on; a piston facing up can even be powered from its head's side. Bedrock Edition does not have quasi-connectivity, so those designs fail there. See redstone basics.

How do pistons differ between editions?

JavaBedrock
Moving chests and other block entitiesCannot push or pull themCan move them, except banners, signs and campfires
Start delay0 or 1 game tick, depending on how it was poweredFixed delay (2 game ticks per the Piston page)
Levers and other attached blocksMostly safe only on the back of a pistonCan sit on the sides and back
One-tick pulse on a sticky pistonDrops the block instead of pulling it backPulls it back
Redstone dust next to a pistonRuns past itCurves into it

See pistons, observers and hoppers.

Do observers work the same?

No. A Bedrock observer acts as a block update detector and fires on anything that causes a block update. A Java observer reacts to shape updates, such as a block's state changing or a block being placed or broken. So each edition's observers notice some changes the other's miss, and farm designs that rely on them often need a version for each edition.

What other redstone differences are there?

  • On Bedrock, comparators can read how full a container is through a piston.
  • On Bedrock, pistons only activate on the input redstone tick, and hoppers can only be locked on it, so timing differs.
  • On Bedrock, transparent blocks can pass redstone power downward.
  • On Bedrock, a redstone torch can be turned off with a one-tick pulse, and one on a powered piston always turns off.

How do you pick a redstone design?

Check which edition a tutorial or video was built for before copying it, and look for a design made for your edition. See Java-only and Bedrock-only features and Bedrock vs Java.
