How Long Until Items Despawn in Minecraft?
Dropped items disappear after 5 minutes (6,000 game ticks) in a loaded chunk. The timer pauses when the chunk is unloaded, so items left far away last until you come back. Items also burn in fire and lava, break on cacti and explosions, and vanish at once in the void. When you die, you have 5 minutes after you return to the area.
How does the despawn timer work?
- Every dropped item has its own 5-minute timer that only runs while its chunk is loaded and ticking (within simulation distance).
- If you go far away, the chunk unloads and the timer stops; it resumes when you return.
- When two stacks of the same item merge, the merged stack keeps the timer with more time left.
- Items that fall below the world (Y=-128 in the Overworld) disappear instantly.
Chunk loading explained: chunks and ticks.
How do you get your items back after dying?
Go straight back: your items stay for 5 minutes of loaded time from when you died there. Note your coordinates before risky trips; a recovery compass points to your last death spot. Keep inventory avoids the problem; see keep inventory and compasses.
What destroys dropped items early?
- Fire and lava (netherite items float in lava and survive).
- Cacti, explosions and the void.
- Players with
/kill @e[type=item]; see /kill. - Items cannot be hit by players or mobs; attacks pass through them.
Can you stop items despawning?
Put them in a chest, hopper or shulker box. Items in item frames, on armor stands, held by mobs, or in containers never despawn. A mob that picks up an item it can use (zombies pick up armor and weapons) also keeps it, and that mob may not despawn anymore. See shulker boxes.
