How to Improve FPS and Reduce Lag in Minecraft
To raise your frame rate, lower the graphics setting to Fast, turn down render and simulation distance, reduce particles, switch off smooth lighting and clouds, and close other programs. On Java, the F3 screen shows your FPS. Lag becomes noticeable below about 50 FPS and the game is hard to play below 30.
How do you check your FPS?
On Java, press F3: the frame rate is under the version number at the top left, and F3 + 2 opens a frame time chart. The debug screen itself costs some FPS, so the number may rise when you close it. On Bedrock, use the debug information in Minecraft Preview or a third-party counter. See the F3 screen.
Which settings give the most FPS?
minecraft.wiki's tutorial lists these, from biggest effect to smallest:
- Graphics: drop Fabulous!, Vibrant Visuals or Ray Traced to Fancy or Fast.
- Lower render distance and simulation distance.
- Particles to Decreased or Minimal (Java). On Minimal you may miss lava drips.
- Turn off smooth lighting, clouds, fancy leaves and fancy bubbles.
- Reduce or turn off biome blend (Java).
- Turn off V-Sync.
- Use fewer add-ons, data packs and resource packs at once.
- A smaller window renders less; full screen can help on a good graphics card.
What in your world causes lag?
- Lots of item frames or map walls in view, even through walls.
- Big farms that make many animals or item entities; give them a lever to turn them off.
- Large redstone machines on fast clocks, and lights that switch on and off quickly.
- Complex terrain such as the Nether, mountains, jungles and mangrove swamps on low-end devices.
What else helps?
Close background programs, especially web browsers, and do not run other heavy programs alongside the game. Keep free space on your drive. For Java, minecraft.wiki's tutorial also lists community performance mods such as Sodium, but notes that section is not supported by Mojang. Check your PC against the official specs on system requirements, and see mods and resource packs.
