Hopper in Minecraft: How It Works and Uses

A hopper moves items: it pulls items from a container or the ground above it and pushes them into the block it points at, about 2.5 items per second. It has 5 slots. A redstone signal locks it, which is the trick behind item sorters and timers. Hoppers are the backbone of almost every automatic farm.

How do you craft a hopper?

5 iron ingots around a chest. Place it while looking at the side or top of a container to point it there; its spout shows the direction. It pulls from chests, furnaces and other containers above it, and collects dropped items that land on top.

What is it used for?

  • Feeding furnaces in auto-smelters
  • Collecting farm drops into chests
  • Item sorters with comparators
  • Hopper minecarts that pull through blocks

More: auto-smelters.

More about the hopper

A hopper placed on the ground points down; sneak and place it against the side of a container to point it into that container. A comparator next to a hopper reads how full it is, and hopper minecarts pull items through a solid block above them. Large numbers of hoppers can add processing lag, so use them where they matter.

Where does it fit in redstone?

Redstone parts fall into power sources (levers, buttons, plates, torches, observers), wiring (dust, repeaters, comparators) and mechanisms (pistons, dispensers, droppers, hoppers, lamps and doors). Most circuits combine one of each: something to detect, something to carry the signal, and something to act. Signals move along dust at once, while each torch, repeater or comparator adds a small delay measured in redstone ticks of 0.1 seconds. Start with redstone basics.

Tips

Powering a hopper stops it moving items, so a lever on a hopper line works as an on-off switch. Signal strength: signal strength.
