How to Remove Enchantments with a Grindstone
Put an enchanted item in a grindstone to take off every enchantment except curses; you get back some experience (50-100% of the enchantments' value). An enchanted book becomes a plain book. Two damaged items of the same type combine into one with their durability added plus a 5% bonus, but with no enchantments.
How do you make a grindstone?
Craft it from sticks, a stone slab and planks. Mine it with a pickaxe or it drops nothing. Grindstones also generate in village weaponsmith houses and in trail ruins, and a grindstone is the weaponsmith's job site block. See villager jobs.
How do you remove enchantments?
Place one enchanted item in either top slot: the output is the same item, same durability, with its enchantments gone. Curses and the item's custom name stay. Take the output and the grindstone drops experience worth 50% to 100% of the removed enchantments. An enchanted book turns into a normal book.
How do you repair with a grindstone?
Put two items of the same type (two pickaxes, two chestplates) in the slots. The result has both items' durability added together, plus 5% of the item's maximum durability, but loses all enchantments. To keep enchantments, repair in an anvil instead. See anvils and Mending.
Why use a grindstone?
- Clear bad enchantments off an item so you can enchant it again; see enchanting.
- Recover experience from enchanted gear you do not need.
- Merge two worn tools of the same type into one.
