Grass Blocks in Minecraft: How to Get and Spread Grass

Grass blocks cover most of the Overworld surface. Mined normally they drop dirt; you need a Silk Touch tool to collect the grass block itself, or kill an enderman holding one. Grass spreads onto nearby dirt in light, its color changes with the biome, and using bone meal on it grows grass and flowers.

How do you get grass blocks?

  • Mine with a Silk Touch tool; see Silk Touch.
  • Kill an enderman that picked one up.
  • Let grass spread onto dirt you place next to existing grass.
  • Snowy grass cannot be collected as an item.

How does grass spread?

Grass spreads to nearby dirt when there is enough light, faster in the day, but not onto coarse dirt or rooted dirt. A block on top of grass that blocks light turns it back into dirt. Dirt types: dirt types.

Why is grass a different color?

Grass, leaves and some plants take their color from the biome, from bright green in jungles to brown-green in savannas and blue-green in some cold biomes. It always uses the color of the biome where it sits, not where it came from. Biomes: biomes.

What can you do with grass blocks?

Use bone meal on them for grass, ferns and flowers; use a shovel to make a dirt path; and use a hoe to turn them into farmland. Animals spawn on grass blocks in light, and sheep eat grass to regrow wool. See bone meal and farmland.
