Granite in Minecraft: Where to Find It and Uses
Granite is a pink-brown natural stone found in big blobs underground and in large copper ore veins. Any pickaxe mines it, and it has the same blast resistance as stone, so it works as a stone substitute. Polishing it makes a smooth building block.
Where is granite found?
It forms large blobs throughout the Overworld's stone, with one batch between Y=0 and Y=60. It also appears in copper ore veins and in desert village armorer houses.
How do you mine it?
Mine it with any pickaxe; it drops itself. Without a pickaxe it drops nothing.
What is granite used for?
- Polished granite, stairs, slabs and walls
- A warm-colored building stone
- Cutting into stairs and slabs on a stonecutter
- Decoration and paths
Tip
Craft 4 granite into 4 polished granite for a smooth, clean texture.
Pickaxes, Silk Touch and Fortune
Most stone-like blocks need a pickaxe: without one they break slowly and drop nothing. Silk Touch picks up a block that normally drops something else, such as an ore or plain stone, and Fortune adds drops to ores but not to plain stone. Blast resistance and hardness decide how well a block survives explosions and how long it takes to break, which matters when you choose a building block for a base. A stonecutter turns stone blocks into stairs, slabs and walls one block at a time, which is cheaper than crafting for stairs (1 stair per block instead of 4 stairs from 6). See tool tiers and copper ore.
