Glass in Minecraft: Panes, Stained and Tinted Glass
Smelt sand in a furnace to make glass. 6 glass make 16 glass panes, 8 glass around a dye make 8 stained glass, and 4 amethyst shards around 1 glass make 2 tinted glass, which blocks light. Breaking glass without Silk Touch destroys it, so place it carefully.

How do you pick glass back up?
Glass, panes and stained glass drop nothing when broken, unless you use a Silk Touch tool. Tinted glass is the exception: it always drops itself. Cartographer villagers buy glass panes, and desert sand makes glass in bulk; see furnaces and smelting.
Does glass let light through?
- Normal and stained glass let light and sunlight through, and mobs cannot spawn on glass.
- Tinted glass looks see-through but blocks light completely, so it keeps a mob farm dark while you watch.
- Stained glass over a beacon colors its beam; stacking colors mixes them. See beacons.
What is glass used for?
Windows, greenhouses, farms you can see into, underwater bases, and redstone builds: glass does not carry redstone power. Glass is also an ingredient of beacons, daylight detectors and end crystals. Panes connect to each other and to walls, like iron bars do.
