Minecraft /give Command: Items, Amounts and Enchants
Type /give @s diamond 64 to give yourself 64 diamonds. The /give command hands any item to a player and needs cheats or operator rights. Java Edition can also add data components such as enchantments, names and lore inside square brackets right after the item name.
How does /give work?
| Edition | Syntax |
|---|---|
| Java | /give <player> <item>[components] [count] |
| Bedrock | /give <player> <item> [amount] [data] [components] |
The player can be a name or a selector: @s is you, @p the nearest player, @a everyone and @r a random player. Item names are the game IDs, such as diamond_sword, oak_log or golden_apple; the chat suggests them as you type. If the inventory is full, the extra items drop at the player's feet. On Java one command can give up to 100 stacks' worth (6,400 of an item that stacks to 64), while Bedrock accepts up to 32,767.
What are some useful /give examples?
| Command | Gives |
|---|---|
/give @s netherite_sword | One netherite sword |
/give @a golden_apple 16 | 16 golden apples to every player |
/give @s diamond_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":5}] | A Sharpness V diamond sword (Java) |
/give @p diamond_sword[lore=["Example"]] | A sword with a line of lore (Java) |
/give @s potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:night_vision"}] | A potion of Night Vision (Java) |
/give @p diamond_sword 1 0 {"keep_on_death":{}} | A sword you keep when you die (Bedrock) |
Java's components let you go past normal limits: minecraft.wiki's own example gives a Sharpness 10 sword this way. On Bedrock the last JSON part only supports four components: can_place_on, can_destroy, item_lock and keep_on_death.
Is /give or /enchant better for enchanted gear?
/enchant adds an enchantment to the item you are holding but follows anvil rules, so no levels above the normal maximum and no clashing enchantments. On Java, /give with an enchantments component skips those rules. See the /enchant command and every enchantment.
Can you /give blocks that have no item?
No. On Bedrock the ID must be an item or a block that has an item form; things like fire or a nether portal block cannot be given. Command blocks, barriers and structure blocks can be given, but only with cheats; see command blocks.
