Best Food in Minecraft: Hunger and Saturation

Golden carrots and cooked porkchops or steak are the best everyday foods: they restore the most saturation, which keeps you healing longest. Your hunger bar holds 20 points; at 18 or more you heal naturally, and at 6 or less you cannot sprint.

How does the hunger bar work?

The hunger bar sits above the hotbar opposite your health, with a maximum of 20 points (10 drumsticks). Behind it is a hidden saturation value that is used up first. Actions such as sprinting, jumping, fighting and healing drain them.

HungerWhat happens
18 or more (or any saturation left)You regenerate health every 4 seconds
17 or lessNatural regeneration stops
6 or lessYou cannot sprint until it is above 7
0Starvation: 1 HP every 4 seconds, ignoring armour

Starvation stops at 10 HP on Easy and 1 HP on Normal; on Hard it can kill you. See difficulty.

Saturation decides how long you stay full, so golden carrots outlast everything else per bite, while cooked porkchop and steak combine high hunger with high saturation.

How long does eating take?

Eating takes 32 game ticks (1.6 seconds). Dried kelp takes half that (0.8 seconds) and honey bottles 2 seconds. You cannot eat at full hunger, except chorus fruit, golden apples, enchanted golden apples, honey bottles and suspicious stew.

Why does food matter in PvP?

Healing depends on hunger, and sprinting needs more than 6 hunger. In 1.9 and later, a full hunger bar with saturation heals 1 HP every half-second (the saturation boost), so eating well before a fight matters; Bedrock has no saturation boost. minecraft.wiki's UHC PvP kit even adds steak so golden apples are not wasted on hunger. See golden apples.

How do you get food on ArtemisPvP?
