Fishing Guide

Cast a fishing rod into any water, wait 5 to 30 seconds for the bite, and reel in. Without enchantments you catch fish 85% of the time, junk 10% and treasure 5%; Lure makes bites faster and Luck of the Sea makes treasure more likely.

How does fishing work in Minecraft?

Use a fishing rod to cast into water. Where you stand does not matter: in the water, in a boat or on land. After the bobber lands, the game waits a random 5 to 30 seconds (100 to 600 ticks); bubbles approach, the bobber dips, and you reel in. You get raw cod, raw salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish, junk or treasure.

What are the fishing odds?

CatchChance without Luck of the Sea
Fish85%
Junk10%
Treasure5%

Treasure includes enchanted books, enchanted bows and enchanted fishing rods; an enchanted bow comes up 0.8% of the time. On Java, treasure only counts if the bobber is in open water: a 5x4x5 area around it of just water or air.

Which enchantments help fishing?

  • Lure: each level cuts 5 seconds off both the minimum and maximum wait.
  • Luck of the Sea: raises the chance of treasure.
  • Unbreaking and Mending: keep the rod alive; with Mending the experience from catches repairs it.

minecraft.wiki's "god rod" is Luck of the Sea III, Lure III, Unbreaking III and Mending; fishing outdoors with it averages about 8 catches and 28 experience a minute.

Is the fishing rod used in PvP?

A rod can hook players and mobs and pull them toward you without dealing damage. Reeling in a mob costs 5 durability. For the 1.8 rod style see 1.8 vs 1.9+ combat.

Is there fishing on ArtemisPvP?
