Exploration Update (1.11)

1.11, the Exploration Update, is the Java Edition update released on 14 November 2016. It added woodland mansions with vindicators and evokers, vexes, the totem of undying, explorer maps from cartographers, observers, shulker boxes and llamas.

What did 1.11 add for explorers?

Woodland mansions, guarded by two new illagers: vindicators with axes and evokers, which summon vexes. Explorer maps, sold only by cartographer villagers, lead to ocean monuments and the new mansions. See woodland mansions.

Where did the totem of undying come from?

Evokers always drop one totem of undying when they die, and holding it saves you from death. See the totem of undying.

What blocks and mobs were added?

  • Observers, which output a redstone signal when they detect a block update.
  • Shulker boxes: two shulker shells around a chest. A shulker box cannot go inside another.
  • Llamas, whose carpets show different patterns by colour.
  • Shulker boxes can be dyed; dyeing one purple returns it to the default colour.

What else changed?

The update also made large changes to entity IDs and brought back spawn eggs removed in 1.10, such as wither skeletons, donkeys, mules and elder guardians, plus new ones for its new mobs. It also warned players running soon-unsupported Java 6 and 7.

Can you use 1.11 on ArtemisPvP?

ArtemisPvP is built for 1.8.9, and the site lists newer Java clients up to 26.2 as able to join at play.artemispvp.com, and Bedrock players can join too. See Getting started on Artemis PvP.
