Echo Shard in Minecraft: How to Get It and Uses

An echo shard is found only in ancient city chests and has one use: 8 echo shards and a compass craft a recovery compass, which points to where you last died.

How do you get an echo shard?

Loot chests in ancient cities deep in the deep dark. Move quietly by sneaking, since sounds can summon the warden.

What is it used for?

  • Crafting recovery compasses
  • Finding your death spot
  • A reason to explore ancient cities
  • Proof you raided an ancient city

More about it

The recovery compass only works in the dimension where you died; elsewhere it spins. Ancient city chests also hold enchanted books with Swift Sneak, an enchantment you cannot get from a table, so search every chest you can reach safely.

Tip

Use wool to block vibrations and avoid sculk shriekers while you search the chests.

Items and recipes

Most items stack to 64 in one inventory slot; tools, armor, potions and a few others do not stack at all. The recipe book in your crafting screen shows every recipe you have unlocked, and picking up a new item unlocks the recipes that use it. In Creative mode every item is in the creative inventory, and with cheats on the /give command hands you any item by its ID. Items you drop disappear after 5 minutes on the ground, so pick up rare drops quickly. See crafting and the deep dark.

Does ArtemisPvP have custom items?

Yes: ArtemisPvP has custom gear on top of vanilla items; see Gear.
