Drowning and Air in Minecraft: How to Breathe Underwater

Underwater you have 10 air bubbles, about 15 seconds of breath. When they run out you drown, taking 2 damage (1 heart) every second until you surface. Respiration, potions of Water Breathing, a turtle shell, Conduit Power and air pockets all help. Bubble columns refill your air, and on Java, placing a door underwater makes a spot to breathe.

How do you breathe longer underwater?

  • Respiration: each level gives a chance not to lose air; see helmet enchantments.
  • Water Breathing potion: no air loss at all while it lasts; see every potion.
  • Turtle shell: 10 seconds of Water Breathing whenever you are above water; see turtles.
  • Conduit Power: from a conduit, endless breath nearby; see conduits.

How do you make an air pocket?

On Java, place a door in the water and stand with your head in it, since doors cannot hold water; signs and ladders fill with water and do not work, and on Bedrock doors fill with water too. Bubble columns from soul sand or magma blocks also refill air while you swim through them. Each bubble on the air bar stands for about 1.5 seconds.

Can mobs drown?

Yes, most land mobs drown, and zombies that drown turn into drowned; see drowned. Skeletons and iron golems do not drown at all. Fish and squid suffocate on land instead.

Can drowning be turned off?

Yes, with the drowning_damage game rule on Java, or drowningdamage on Bedrock; see game rules. Players in Creative mode do not take drowning damage.
