Dropper in Minecraft: How It Works and Uses

A dropper drops one item from its 9 slots each time it gets a redstone pulse, or pushes it into a container it faces. Unlike a dispenser it never fires or places items, which makes it ideal for moving items upward in elevators and for item sorters and vending machines.

How do you craft a dropper?

7 cobblestone and redstone dust. Each pulse drops or pushes one random item. Chains of droppers facing up move items up a tower.

What is it used for?

  • Item elevators
  • Vending machines and shops
  • Feeding items into hoppers or other droppers
  • Random item dispensers in minigames

More: redstone clocks.

More about the dropper

A dropper facing into a hopper, chest or another dropper moves the item there instead of dropping it, which makes vertical item elevators possible. It has 9 slots like a dispenser but never uses the items itself, so it is safe for moving anything, even items like flint and steel or bone meal.

Where does it fit in redstone?

Redstone parts fall into power sources (levers, buttons, plates, torches, observers), wiring (dust, repeaters, comparators) and mechanisms (pistons, dispensers, droppers, hoppers, lamps and doors). Most circuits combine one of each: something to detect, something to carry the signal, and something to act. Signals move along dust at once, while each torch, repeater or comparator adds a small delay measured in redstone ticks of 0.1 seconds. Start with redstone basics.

Tips

Use a clock or observer to pulse a dropper chain quickly. Signal strength: signal strength.
