Dripstone Caves and Pointed Dripstone Explained

Dripstone caves are cave biomes full of stalactites and stalagmites made of pointed dripstone, found far inland and often under mountains. Pointed dripstone hurts: a falling stalactite damages whatever it lands on and landing on a stalagmite doubles fall damage. Placed under a water or lava source, it also drips liquid into a cauldron, making lava renewable.

Where are dripstone caves?

They generate where land is far inland, so they are almost never under oceans or near a coast, and they are frequent under mountains, usually above the deep dark. Humid areas such as dark forests and taigas get them less often, because lush caves form there instead. Look for small water pools with waterlogged dripstone and larger copper ore blobs than in other caves. Drowned can spawn in their aquifers. See biomes.

Why is pointed dripstone dangerous?

  • Stalactites (hanging) fall when the block holding them breaks, and hurt players and mobs below like a falling anvil.
  • Stalagmites (standing) double the fall distance used for fall damage if you land on the tip.
  • A thrown trident breaks pointed dripstone instantly; other projectiles cannot.

How does pointed dripstone grow?

A stalactite grows only when it hangs under a dripstone block with a water source above. It grows down to at most 8 blocks, and a stalagmite can grow up from a solid block less than 11 blocks below the tip. Each step takes about 5 in-game days on average, so dripstone farms are slow.

How do you get lava or water from dripstone?

Put a water or lava source two blocks above the top of a stalactite and a cauldron within 10 blocks below its tip: it slowly drips that liquid into the cauldron, so lava becomes renewable. Mud placed above a block with a stalactite under it slowly turns into clay, except in the Nether. See cobblestone and obsidian generators.

Does ArtemisPvP have a mining challenge?

Yes: Hell Mining is an ArtemisPvP trial room where you mine ores on floating islands to unlock the door before time runs out; see Hell Mining.
