Dried Kelp in Minecraft: Hunger and Saturation
Dried kelp restores only 1 hunger, but you eat it in 0.8 seconds, twice as fast as other food. Its saturation is 0.6 on Java and 0.2 on Bedrock. Nine make a dried kelp block, a good furnace fuel.
How much does dried kelp restore?
| Hunger | 1 |
| Saturation | 0.6 |
Each hunger point is half a drumstick, so 1 hunger is 0.5 drumsticks.
How do you get it?
Smelt kelp in a furnace, smoker or campfire, or craft a dried kelp block back into 9 pieces. Farmers gift it on Java.
Tips
Kelp grows fast underwater, so a kelp farm feeds an auto-smelter fuel line too.
More about dried kelp
As food, the wiki notes it works much like a melon slice or raw mutton, but eaten at twice the speed. Each piece smelted gives 0.1 experience, and the blocks also go in a composter.
How hunger works
Hunger points refill the hunger bar (20 points, 10 drumsticks), and saturation is a hidden buffer that drains first. With 18 or more hunger, or any saturation, health regenerates naturally; at 6 or less you cannot sprint, and at 0 you take starvation damage. Most foods take 1.6 seconds to eat, and you cannot eat at full hunger except a few special foods. Foods with high saturation keep you healing longer, which matters most in fights. Raw food cooks the same in a furnace, a smoker or a campfire: smokers are twice as fast, and campfires need no fuel at all. See food and hunger and kelp.
