Deepslate in Minecraft: Where to Find It and Uses
Deepslate is the dark stone that makes up the world below Y=0. It takes twice as long to mine as stone and drops cobbled deepslate unless you use Silk Touch. Ores in it become deepslate ores, which drop the same items.
Where is deepslate found?
Stone slowly turns into deepslate from Y=8 down to Y=0, and below that almost all solid blocks are deepslate. Ancient cities are built largely from deepslate.
How do you mine it?
Mine it with any pickaxe; it drops cobbled deepslate, or deepslate with Silk Touch. Smelting cobbled deepslate gives deepslate back. It can be placed in three orientations like logs.
What is deepslate used for?
- Cobbled deepslate for tools, furnaces and brewing stands
- Polished deepslate, deepslate bricks and tiles for builds
- Chiseled deepslate for decoration
- Dark building blocks for modern builds
Tip
Efficiency and Haste make a big difference here, because every block is twice as slow as stone.
Pickaxes, Silk Touch and Fortune
Most stone-like blocks need a pickaxe: without one they break slowly and drop nothing. Silk Touch picks up a block that normally drops something else, such as an ore or plain stone, and Fortune adds drops to ores but not to plain stone. Blast resistance and hardness decide how well a block survives explosions and how long it takes to break, which matters when you choose a building block for a base. A stonecutter turns stone blocks into stairs, slabs and walls one block at a time, which is cheaper than crafting for stairs (1 stair per block instead of 4 stairs from 6). See tool tiers and ore Y levels.
