The Deep Dark in Minecraft: Biome Guide

The deep dark is a cave biome deep underground, usually in the deepslate layer under mountains. It is covered in sculk, nearly pitch black, and no mobs spawn there naturally, except the warden, which comes when sculk shriekers are triggered. It is the only biome with ancient cities, which hold some of the best loot in the game.

Where is the deep dark?

Deep in the deepslate layer, mostly below Y=0, most often under mountain biomes such as jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks, groves and snowy slopes. Look for sculk spreading across the cave floor. Java and Bedrock can use /locate biome minecraft:deep_dark; see /locate.

What is in the deep dark?

  • Sculk, sculk veins, sculk sensors, sculk shriekers and sculk catalysts; see sculk blocks.
  • Very little light: almost no glow lichen, only catalysts and lava.
  • Ancient cities, plus monster rooms, strongholds and amethyst geodes; mineshafts and trial chambers never form here.
  • No normal mob spawning at all.

How do you avoid the warden?

Sneak to make no vibrations, avoid stepping on sculk sensors, and place wool over sensors and shriekers. Four shrieks summon a warden, which is far too strong to fight in normal gear; see the warden. Shriekers also give Darkness, which dims your screen. Night vision potions help you see in the gloom without lighting the whole cave.

Why go there?

Ancient cities have swift sneak books, echo shards for recovery compasses, enchanted golden apples and the Ward and Silence armor trims; see ancient cities. Sculk catalysts also let you build XP-storing sculk.

Frequently asked questions
