The Creaking: How to Beat It and Its Heart

The creaking is a hostile mob from the pale garden that a creaking heart spawns at night. It freezes while you look at it and moves when you look away. You cannot hurt a creaking from a heart: to kill it, find and break the creaking heart hidden inside a pale oak trunk, and the creaking dies with it.

What is the creaking?

A creaking is spawned at night by an active creaking heart and walks around until it notices you. It cannot move at all while a player in Survival or Adventure can see it, so it only creeps closer when you look away; invisibility does not fool it. It headbutts for 2.5 HP on Easy, 3 on Normal and 4 on Hard, and stays within 32 blocks of its heart, even while chasing you.

How do you kill a creaking?

You don't, directly: a creaking from a heart is immune to all damage (except the void and /kill). Instead, find its creaking heart and break it; the creaking twitches and dies. Hearts sit inside the top trunks of pale oak trees in the pale garden (about 10% of them), always fully covered by pale oak logs, so you may need to dig into trees to find one.

How does a creaking heart work?

A creaking heart is active when it sits in a line between two pale oak logs or wood blocks facing the same way. Then, at night, it spawns a creaking and protects it. If its creaking strays more than 32 blocks or is removed, the heart tries to spawn a new one. Creaking hearts can also be crafted. See The Garden Awakens (1.21.4), the drop that added the creaking and the pale garden.

How do you survive a pale garden at night?

  • Keep the creaking in view while you back off or dig toward its heart.
  • Do not wear a carved pumpkin: while you do, creakings in your view can still move.
  • Spawn-egg creakings are different: they are not linked to a heart, take damage normally and stay in daylight.

See biomes for where pale gardens grow.

Does ArtemisPvP have its own night monsters?
