Crafting Guide
You craft in the 2x2 grid in your inventory or the 3x3 grid of a crafting table, which you make from 4 wooden planks. Arrange items in the shape of a recipe; the recipe book shows every recipe you have unlocked.
How does crafting work in Minecraft?
Your inventory has a 2x2 crafting grid, enough for small recipes such as planks, sticks and the crafting table. Fill the 2x2 grid with any wooden planks to make a crafting table; use it to open a 3x3 grid that can make any recipe in the game.
Place items in the grid to match a recipe and the result appears on the right. Crafting is the one workstation action that makes no sound.
What are shaped and shapeless recipes?

How does the recipe book work?
The recipe book lists every recipe you have unlocked. On Java it has five tabs: all recipes, then tools, weapons and armour, building blocks, food and miscellaneous, and redstone. On Bedrock the tabs follow the Creative inventory.
Recipes can be changed by data packs on Java and add-ons on Bedrock, which is how servers add custom recipes.
Can you automate crafting?
Yes, since 1.21: the crafter crafts anything a crafting table can, one item per redstone pulse, and hoppers can feed it. It is crafted from five iron ingots, a crafting table, two redstone dust and a dropper. See 1.21 Tricky Trials.
