The Crafting Table in Minecraft: Recipe and Uses
A crafting table gives you a 3 by 3 crafting grid, needed for most recipes, compared with the 2 by 2 grid in your inventory. Craft one from 4 planks of any wood, usually the first thing you make in a new world. The recipe book sits beside the grid to show and auto-fill recipes you have unlocked.
How do you make a crafting table?
Punch a tree for logs, turn one log into 4 planks in your inventory, then fill the 2 by 2 grid with the planks. Place it and use it to open the bigger grid. Any wood works; see wood types.
What needs a crafting table?
- Tools, weapons and armor.
- Furnaces, chests, beds, doors and most blocks.
- Redstone parts like pistons, repeaters and hoppers.
- Anything with a 3 by 3 shape; the inventory grid only fits 2 by 2 recipes.
- Recipes: crafting.
How does the recipe book help?
Click the green book to see unlocked recipes; click one to fill the grid automatically. It is collapsed by default on Java and open on Bedrock. See the recipe book. For automatic crafting with redstone, use a crafter; see the crafter.
Anything else?
Almost every tool and many blocks pass through it, so place one early in every base and carry a spare when you travel far. Break it fastest with an axe; it always drops. It burns as furnace fuel. A hidden crafting table even generates in one trial chamber room. It is not a villager job block; villagers use other workstations; see workstations.
