CPS in Minecraft PvP: Does Clicking Faster Help?
CPS means clicks per second. Clicking faster does not add damage, because after a hit a player or mob is invulnerable for 10 game ticks (half a second), so one target takes at most about two damaging hits a second. Fast clicking still matters for knockback, breaking sprints and some bridging; on Java 1.9+ the attack cooldown rewards timed hits instead.
What does CPS mean in Minecraft?
CPS is clicks per second: how many times you press the attack (or place) button each second. It comes up most in PvP and bridging. Players talk about spam-clicking (clicking as fast as they can) and time-clicking (clicking at a chosen rhythm); see PvP terms.
Is there a limit to how many hits land?
Yes. After taking damage, a player or mob turns red for 10 game ticks (0.5 seconds) and is immune to most further damage. Hits that land in that window deal no damage, so against one target, damage per second is effectively capped at about 2 hits a second no matter how fast you click. Faster clicking helps you land the hit the moment the window ends, not stack more damage.
Does CPS matter in 1.8 and 1.9+ PvP?
| 1.8-style / Bedrock | Java 1.9+ | |
|---|---|---|
| Attack cooldown | None | Yes: hitting early does less damage |
| Crits and sprint hits | No charge needed (on Bedrock you must stop sprinting to crit) | Need at least 84.8% charge |
Java 1.9 added the attack cooldown: attacking before the meter fills deals less damage, and below 84.8% you cannot crit or sprint-hit. Bedrock has no attack cooldown. See 1.8 vs 1.9 PvP.
When does spam-clicking help on modern Java?
- Spam-clicking with a Knockback I sword pushes an enemy away without waiting for the cooldown, to break combos or keep a crit-chaser out of reach.
- It can break an opponent's sprint when you circle each other, making them easy to combo.
- Spam-clicking 2-3 times with an axe disables a shield, before you swap back to your sword; see shields.
What about CPS on Bedrock?
minecraft.wiki's Bedrock PvP guide names click speed consistency (a steady CPS rather than bursts) as one of the two core skills, with aim. On some server knockback settings a slower rhythm, around 2 CPS in the air, keeps an airborne opponent in combo range. On Bedrock, attacking an invulnerable target still wears down your weapon, so high CPS breaks items faster; on Java it does not. See Bedrock PvP.
Does CPS matter for bridging?
For the hardest methods, yes: god bridging needs a very fast CPS, and telly bridging needs fast CPS and precise timing. Most methods do not.
Is butterfly or jitter clicking allowed on ArtemisPvP?
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CPS in Minecraft?
There is no official number: damage is capped by the 0.5-second invulnerability, so steady, well-timed clicks matter more than raw speed.
Does higher CPS do more damage?
No. A target can only take damage about twice a second because of the 10-tick invulnerability timer.
