Coordinates: How to See and Use Them
Press F3 on Java Edition to see your X, Y and Z coordinates; on Bedrock, turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings. X is east (+) and west (-), Z is south (+) and north (-), and Y is height from -64 to 320, with sea level at 63.
How do you show coordinates?
- Java: press F3 (Fn + F3 on Macs and some laptops) to open the debug screen; your XYZ position, facing and block position are at the top left.
- Bedrock: turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings, or run
/gamerule showcoordinates true. - Bedrock's Copy Coordinate UI creator setting also shows them in chat with two decimals.
What do X, Y and Z mean?
| Axis | Positive | Negative | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| X | East | West | - |
| Z | South | North | - |
| Y | Up | Down | -64 to 320 (sea level 63) |
One block is one metre. The point X=0, Z=0 is the world's origin. Note that north is negative Z, so a Minecraft map is turned a quarter turn compared with a maths graph.
What is a block position?
Your coordinates are measured at the centre of the bottom of your hitbox: at Y=63.0 your feet are at 63 and your eyes at 64.62. A block's position is its lower north-west corner, found by rounding down, so negative coordinates start at -1.
What are coordinates useful for?
- Finding your way home and sharing locations.
- Linking Nether portals with the 1:8 rule; see Nether portals.
- Mining at the right depth; see best Y levels.
- Commands such as
/tpuse them, including relative ones written with ~.
