Minecraft /clear Command: Empty an Inventory
Type /clear to delete everything in your inventory, /clear @s dirt to remove only dirt, or /clear @s dirt 10 (Java; on Bedrock /clear @s dirt 0 10) to remove up to 10. /clear also works on other players with a name or selector, needs cheats or operator rights, and cannot be undone, so put anything valuable in a chest first.
How does /clear work?
| Edition | Syntax |
|---|---|
| Java | /clear [targets] [item] [maxCount] |
| Bedrock | /clear [player] [item] [data] [maxCount] |
With no arguments it clears your whole inventory, including armor and offhand. A count of 0 removes nothing but tells you how many matching items the player has, which command makers use as a check.
What are useful /clear examples?
| Command | Result |
|---|---|
/clear | Empties your inventory |
/clear @a | Empties every player's inventory |
/clear @s cobblestone | Removes all your cobblestone |
/clear @p golden_apple 1 | Takes one golden apple from the nearest player (Java; Bedrock: /clear @p golden_apple 0 1) |
/clear @s #minecraft:logs | Removes every kind of log (Java item tags) |
Selectors: target selectors. Giving items back: /give.
When is /clear used?
Minigames clear inventories at the start of a round, map makers take quest items away once they are used, and players tidy up in creative. Command blocks can also clear a banned item from everyone, for example ender pearls in an arena, by running /clear @a ender_pearl on a timer. On a server only operators can run it, so normal players cannot wipe each other. In survival, a lost inventory is usually recovered by going back where you died; see item despawning and keep inventory.
