Cactus in Minecraft: Farming, Damage and Green Dye

Cactus grows on sand in deserts and badlands, up to 3 blocks tall, and hurts anything touching it (1 damage every half second) while destroying dropped items. It breaks if any solid block is placed right next to it, which is how cactus farms harvest it. Smelt it for green dye and the best smelting XP of any farmable block on Java.

What are the rules for cactus?

  • It can only be placed on sand, red sand, suspicious sand or another cactus.
  • Any solid block next to it on the 4 sides breaks it into an item.
  • It grows one block about every 18 minutes on average, up to 3 tall; bone meal does not work.
  • It can also sprout a pink cactus flower, which makes pink dye.

Desert guide: deserts.

How does a cactus farm work?

Place sand with space around it, and put a block (such as a fence or string) diagonally so the cactus grows into a spot next to it and pops off. The item falls into water or onto hoppers. It needs no redstone and runs on its own. Smelting cactus gives the most XP per item of any farm on Java; see XP farms and farms.

How much does cactus hurt?

1 damage every half second while touching it, reduced by armor. It also destroys items and minecarts that touch it, so keep it away from hopper lines. Falling sand landing on cactus turns into an item. See health and damage.

What is cactus used for?

Green dye, camels (they follow you and breed with cactus), composting (50% chance), and traps. Wandering traders sell it for emeralds. See camels.

Are there farm-friendly blocks on ArtemisPvP?

ArtemisPvP has its own custom blocks for faction bases; see Custom Blocks.
