Bridging and Clutches
Bridging is placing blocks under or in front of you fast to cross a gap without falling. The main methods, from easiest to hardest, are shift, ninja, god and telly bridging; clutches such as the water bucket save you when you do fall.
What is bridging in Minecraft?
minecraft.wiki defines bridging as building a bridge quickly and with little risk of falling. It matters most in games played on floating islands, such as Bed Wars and Sky Wars, where bridges are the only way between islands. Any solid block works: wool, planks, cobblestone and so on.
What are the bridging methods?
| Method | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shift bridging | Crouch, walk backwards and hold place while facing the side of the blocks; walking backwards diagonally is a little faster | One of the easiest |
| Ninja bridging | Tap crouch on and off as you place, crouching again at each edge so you never fall | Much faster than shift bridging |
| God bridging | Face backwards, hold the back key and spam the place button; keeps normal walking speed but needs very high clicks per second | Extremely hard |
| Telly bridging | Sprint-jump out over the void and place blocks mid-air; reaches sprinting speed | The hardest of these |
| Simple bridging (Bedrock only) | Look at the spot beside the block you stand on and place while walking forward | Bedrock only |
How do you water bucket clutch?
A clutch (or MLG) saves you from a fall. For the water bucket clutch, place water just before you hit the ground, then pick it back up. It fails if you place it on leaves or mangrove roots (they become waterlogged and you still take damage), and in the Nether, where water evaporates.
- Slime block: cancels all fall damage; hold sneak or jump to stop bouncing.
- Hay bale: cuts fall damage by 80%.
- Ender pearl: throw it just before landing; you take only the pearl's 5 HP (two and a half hearts) instead of the fall. Throw too early and you may hit the ground first, because a pearl falls slower than you.
How do you get better at bridging?
- Learn shift bridging until you never fall, then speed up with ninja bridging.
- Practise in a safe world over a low drop before trying it in a match.
- Keep a stack of blocks in the same hotbar slot every game.
- Watch your block count: running out mid-bridge is the most common way to die.
