Brewing and Potions Guide
Potions are brewed in a brewing stand: water bottles plus nether wart make an awkward potion, an effect ingredient gives it an effect, redstone makes it last longer, glowstone makes it stronger, gunpowder makes it a splash potion and dragon's breath a lingering one.
How do you make potions in Minecraft?
- Fuel the brewing stand with blaze powder: one piece lasts 20 brews, and each brew takes 20 seconds.
- Fill glass bottles with water and put them in the brewing stand.
- Add nether wart to make awkward potions, the base for most potions.
- Add an effect ingredient (table below).
- Optionally add redstone dust (longer), glowstone dust (stronger), a fermented spider eye (corrupts the effect), gunpowder (splash) or dragon's breath (lingering).
Stronger potions usually last less time, and extended potions cannot be made stronger. Splash potions last as long as the drinkable kind; lingering potions last a quarter as long.

Which potions matter in PvP?
Pot PvP kits are built around splash potions of Healing, which heal instantly when they hit you, and some Mace PvP kits add splash potions of Strength and Speed. Fire Resistance lets you survive fire and lava. In 1.9 and later, splash potions last as long as drinkable ones; since 1.21.2, a splash potion thrown at your feet lasts almost as long as one that hits your head.
