Bountiful Update (1.8)
1.8, the Bountiful Update, is the major Java Edition update released on 2 September 2014. It added ocean monuments with guardians, rabbits, slime blocks, banners, granite, diorite and andesite, armour stands, barriers and a customisable world border.
What did the Bountiful Update add?
- Ocean monuments, guarded by guardians and 3 elder guardians each, built from prismarine with sea lanterns (light level 15).
- Rabbits with 8 skins, rabbit stew and the rabbit's foot for the new Potion of Leaping.
- Slime blocks (9 slimeballs) that bounce players and mobs like a trampoline.
- Granite, diorite and andesite and their polished forms, plus red sandstone, coarse dirt and iron trapdoors.
- Banners, new wood fences, gates and doors, and armour stands.
- Endermites, which sometimes appear when you throw an ender pearl.
- Mapmaker tools: barriers, a world border and many new commands.
Why is 1.8 still important for PvP?
1.8 is the last major version before the 1.9 Combat Update. In 1.8 there is no attack cooldown and swords can block, so damage does not depend on timing a meter. 1.8.9, the last 1.8 release (9 December 2015), is compatible with servers running 1.8 to 1.8.8, and minecraft.wiki still keeps a separate 1.8 PvP tutorial.
ArtemisPvP is one server built for 1.8.9. See 1.8 vs 1.9+ combat.
What food came in 1.8?
| Food | Hunger restored | Saturation |

| Raw mutton | 2 | 1.2 |
| Cooked mutton | 6 | 9.6 |
| Raw rabbit | 3 | 1.8 |
| Cooked rabbit | 5 | 6 |
| Rabbit stew | 10 | 12 |
