Blazes: Fireballs, Blaze Rods and How to Fight Them
Blazes are flying fire mobs with 20 HP found only in Nether fortresses, where they spawn in light level 11 or less and from blaze spawners. They fire volleys of three small fireballs and are the only source of blaze rods, which you need for brewing stands and eyes of ender. Snowballs deal 3 damage to them, and Fire Resistance blocks their fireballs' burn.
Where do blazes spawn?
Only in Nether fortresses: naturally in groups of 2-3 on Java (1-3 on Bedrock) at light level 11 or less, and from blaze spawners. A fortress can have up to two spawner platforms, each fenced with Nether brick and reached by a three-block staircase. See Nether fortresses.
How do blazes attack?
A blaze that sees you from at least 2 blocks away charges for 3 seconds, then fires three small fireballs 0.3 seconds apart, then waits 5 seconds. Each fireball deals 5 damage on Normal and sets you on fire for 5 seconds; a shield blocks both. Up close it hits once a second instead. Hurting one alerts other blazes nearby, and they track you even without line of sight.
How do you fight blazes safely?
- Drink a Fire Resistance potion: it stops the burning, although the melee hit still hurts. See brewing.
- Carry a shield to block fireballs.
- Break line of sight: blazes need to see you to attack.
- Light up the spawner with torches to stop it spawning more.
What are blaze rods used for?
Blazes drop 0-1 blaze rod (50%), more with Looting, and 10 experience. Rods craft brewing stands and blaze powder, which fuels brewing and crafts eyes of ender for finding the End. See blaze farms.
