Bees, Honey and Honeycomb
Bees fill their nest or beehive with honey from flowers; when the honey level reaches 5, use a glass bottle for honey or shears for honeycomb. Put a lit campfire within 5 blocks underneath first, or the bees will attack.
How do bees work?
A bee is a neutral flying mob that lives in a bee nest or beehive. In the day it leaves to gather nectar from flowers, flowering azaleas, cherry leaves, pink petals, wildflowers, cactus flowers and similar plants, then returns home. Each pollinated bee that comes back raises the hive's honey level by one; at level 5 it is ready to harvest. On the way home, bees also help nearby crops grow; see crop farming.
Bee nests generate naturally in biomes such as sunflower plains, cherry groves and birch forests.
How do you get honey without getting stung?
- Place a lit campfire (or fire) directly beneath the nest, up to 5 blocks below, with the smoke unblocked.
- Use a glass bottle on a full nest for a honey bottle, or shears for honeycomb.
- To move a nest without angering the bees inside, break it with a Silk Touch tool; the bees stay inside.
Harvesting or breaking a home without these precautions makes the bees inside, and every bee nearby, angry at you.
What happens if a bee stings you?
A sting poisons you: Poison I for 10 seconds on Normal and 18 seconds on Hard. The bee loses its stinger, stops attacking and dies about a minute later. Drinking a honey bottle cures Poison.
