Bedrock Crossplay and Joining Java Servers

Bedrock Edition has crossplay between all Bedrock devices, but it cannot join Java Edition servers on its own. Java servers that want Bedrock players run a proxy such as Geyser, which translates between the two editions.

Does Minecraft have crossplay?

Yes, inside each edition. Bedrock's multiplayer is cross-platform between all of its supported devices: Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android and iOS players can share a world, a Realm or a server. Java Edition players play with each other on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Between the two editions there is no official crossplay. minecraft.net says the editions use different servers, so Java and Bedrock players cannot play together.

How can Bedrock players join a Java server?

Only if the Java server supports it. minecraft.wiki's Bedrock PvP guide describes Geyser servers: Bedrock players connect through the Geyser proxy to a Java Edition server, and the session effectively follows Java Edition's PvP rules. So a Bedrock player can only reach a Java server that has chosen to run such a bridge.

  • On Windows, Android or iOS: add the server to your server list with its address and port. Bedrock servers listen on UDP port 19132 by default.
  • On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch: joining a server by IP is not supported, so consoles can normally reach only the featured servers and Realms.
  • On consoles, online play needs the platform's paid subscription, such as Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch Online or PlayStation Plus.

Does combat feel different on a crossplay server?

Yes. Native Bedrock PvP has no attack cooldown and its own knockback, so the Bedrock community plays "spam-click" combat. On a Geyser server the Java rules apply instead, including the attack cooldown on modern versions. See Bedrock PvP and 1.8 vs 1.9+ combat.

Why can't I join a server?

  • Wrong edition: a Java-only server cannot be joined from Bedrock.
  • "Outdated client" or "Outdated server": your version does not match the server's protocol version.
  • "Cannot resolve hostname": the address is mistyped.
  • "Cannot connect to server": the server is down or you are offline.

Can Bedrock players join ArtemisPvP?

Java and Bedrock players can both join ArtemisPvP at play.artemispvp.com; Java players can use any version from 1.8.9 up to 26.2. See How to join.
