Battle Royale
Battle Royale is a last-player-standing minigame where everyone starts with nothing and a border closes in: find gear fast, stay inside the ring, and be the last one alive.
How does Battle Royale work in Minecraft?
Battle Royale is the shrinking-map cousin of Hunger Games. Players drop in empty-handed, loot weapons and armour as they go, and a border shrinks the safe area. Anyone caught outside takes damage until they die or get back in, so fights are forced closer together as the ring closes. The last player alive wins.
How does the border work?
Vanilla Minecraft's closest tool for this is the world border, which the /worldborder command can resize, re-centre and make grow or shrink gradually. The border has a damage-per-block setting for anyone outside it and a safe buffer zone; it shows red stripes while shrinking. By default the world border sits 29,999,984 blocks from the centre, so the game sets a much smaller one.
What happens if you are caught outside the ring?
With vanilla's world border, players outside take constant damage that grows with their distance from the border, once they are more than 5 blocks past it (the default buffer). Creative and Spectator players are not hurt. The stripes turn red while the border shrinks and green while it grows, and a warning overlay appears on your screen as the border approaches. You also cannot mine or interact with blocks outside it, so you cannot dig in to hide. See the world border.
How do you win Battle Royale?
- Loot the first building you see; speed matters more than perfect gear.
- Watch the ring and move early, before you are stuck fighting at its edge.
- Avoid open ground when the ring is small.
- Keep healing items for the end, when every fight is forced.
