Axolotls in Minecraft: Colors, Breeding and Taming
Axolotls are friendly water mobs that live in lush caves, spawning where there is clay under the water. They come in five colors: pink (leucistic), brown, gold, cyan and blue, and blue is the rarest: a 1 in 1,200 chance when you breed them, and it never spawns naturally. Scoop one up with a water bucket and breed them with buckets of tropical fish.
What colors can axolotls be?
| Color | How to get it |
|---|---|
| Pink (leucistic), brown, gold, cyan | Spawn naturally in lush caves |
| Blue | Only by breeding: 1 in 1,200 (0.083%) per baby |
Rare finds across the game: the rarest things in Minecraft.
How do you get an axolotl?
Use a water bucket on one to carry it as a bucket of axolotl, then empty it where you want it. They spawn underwater in lush caves when there is a clay block less than 5 blocks below; see lush caves. They follow you if you hold a bucket of tropical fish.
How do you breed axolotls?
Feed two adults a bucket of tropical fish each; a baby appears with 1-7 experience. Parents wait 5 minutes on Java or 1 minute on Bedrock before breeding again. The baby takes one parent's color, except for the small blue chance. Catch tropical fish with a water bucket; see fish.
Do axolotls help you fight?
Yes: they attack drowned, guardians and most other water mobs for 2 damage a hit, and when you finish off a mob they were fighting, you get Regeneration and lose any Mining Fatigue. They play dead to heal when hurt. Great company in an ocean monument raid; see guardians. Axolotls have 14 health and dry out on land. Overview of similar animals: parrots, llamas, foxes and axolotls.
