Armadillos in Minecraft: Scutes and Wolf Armor
Armadillos are passive mobs in savannas and badlands that roll into a ball when hurt or when something scary comes near. Brush one to get an armadillo scute; 6 scutes make wolf armor. They also drop a scute on their own every 5-10 minutes, breed with spider eyes, and spiders run away from them.
How do you get armadillo scutes?
- Brush an armadillo: each brush uses 16 durability, so a new brush gets 4 scutes on Java and 5 on Bedrock before breaking.
- Wait: every armadillo drops 1 scute every 5-10 minutes, like a chicken laying eggs.
- A dispenser with a brush can brush them automatically.
6 scutes make wolf armor; see wolves. Brushes are from archaeology; see archaeology.
Why does an armadillo roll up?
It hides in its shell when it is hurt, or when undead mobs, sprinting players or players riding something come close. Rolled up, it takes far less damage, does not move and ignores food. Walk slowly and do not ride near them if you want to brush one.
Where do armadillos spawn?
In groups of 2-3 (Java) or up to 4 (Bedrock) in savannas, savanna plateaus and windswept savannas, and 1-2 in badlands, eroded badlands and wooded badlands, in bright light. See savannas and badlands.
How do you breed armadillos?
Feed two of them spider eyes. They follow players holding spider eyes, babies take 20 minutes to grow, and spider eyes speed that up by 10% each. Spiders and cave spiders flee from an unrolled armadillo within 6 blocks. See breeding animals.
