The Allay: How to Find, Use and Duplicate It
The allay is a small flying mob that collects items for you. Give it an item and it fetches every matching dropped item within 32 blocks and brings it to you, or to a note block it heard. Find allays caged at pillager outposts or locked in woodland mansion jails, and duplicate one by giving it an amethyst shard while it dances to a jukebox.
Where do you find allays?
Allays only spawn when the world is generated: a 50% chance of 1-3 allays in the dark oak cages near pillager outposts, and the same chance in the jail cells of woodland mansions. See mansions and outposts.
How do you use an allay?
Use an item on the allay to give it. It then follows you within 64 blocks and looks for dropped copies of that item within 32 blocks of you, picking them up from about 1.3 blocks away and dropping them near you. It waits three seconds after each delivery. If it hears a note block within 16 blocks, it delivers to the note block instead and stays near it for 30 seconds, gathering items for it.
How do you duplicate an allay?
Play a music disc in a jukebox so the allay dances, then give it an amethyst shard: it splits into two allays and the shard is used up. Both then have a five-minute cooldown before they can duplicate again. Allays have no baby form, so this is the only way to get more.
What else should you know about allays?
- 20 HP; your own hits cannot hurt your allay, and if something else hurts it, it flies off for a few seconds.
- It drops only the item it is holding when killed, and no experience.
- It cannot go into water, though it tries to reach items there.
- It picks nothing up if the mob_griefing game rule is off; see game rules.
- It glows faintly in the dark but gives off no light.
