How to give villagers jobs, get the trades you want, keep prices low and protect a village. Trades follow the current game, not the experimental trade rebalance.
What block gives a villager a job?
Each job has a job site block: a lectern makes a librarian, a composter a farmer, a blast furnace an armorer, a grindstone a weaponsmith, and so on.
The others: smoker butcher, cartography table cartographer, brewing stand cleric, cauldron leatherworker, barrel fisherman, fletching table fletcher, loom shepherd, stonecutter mason, smithing table toolsmith.
How do you change a villager's job?
Break its job site block before you trade with it, then place a different one. It takes the new job if it has never traded.

How do you reroll villager trades?
Break and replace the villager's job site block until the trade you want appears. This works only before your first trade with it.

What is a nitwit villager?
A nitwit is a villager in a green coat that can never take a job or trade. It still breeds and sleeps.

Why won't my villager take a job?
It may be a nitwit or a baby, the job block may be claimed by another villager, or it cannot reach the block.
How do you tell what job a villager has?
Look at its clothes, which differ for each job, or open its trade screen, which shows the job name.

What is an unemployed villager?
A villager in plain biome clothes with no job. It takes a job when it finds a free job site block.

How do you get a Mending book from a villager?
Make a librarian with a lectern and reroll it until its first enchanted book trade is Mending, then trade once to lock it.
What are the best villager trades?
Librarian enchanted books (such as Mending), cheap emerald trades from farmers and fletchers, and diamond gear from master armorers and toolsmiths.

How many trades can a villager have?
On Java a villager has up to 10 trades, two per level. On Bedrock it has 7 to 10 trade slots.

What are villager levels?
Villagers level up from Novice to Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Master as you trade with them. Each level unlocks new trades.
The badge on their belt shows the level: stone, iron, gold, emerald and diamond.

How often do villagers restock?
Villagers restock up to twice a day when they work at their job site block. On Bedrock a villager also needs a bed to restock.

Why did my villager prices go up?
Prices rise when a trade is in high demand, after you buy it many times. They also go up if you hurt the villager or nearby ones.

How do you get cheaper villager trades?
Cure zombie villagers, win a raid for Hero of the Village, and avoid hurting villagers. Each lowers prices.
On Java, Hero of the Village gives 30% off at level I, up to 55% at level V. Bedrock has a single level.

What is Hero of the Village?
Hero of the Village is an effect you get for defeating a raid. Villagers give you discounts while it lasts, and on Java they also throw you gifts.
How do you get emeralds fast?
Trade cheap items such as wheat, sticks, paper or carrots to villagers who buy them. Many trades pay one emerald each.

What do cartographers sell?
Cartographers sell explorer maps to ocean monuments and woodland mansions, and in 1.21+ to trial chambers. They also sell banner patterns and blank maps.

Can you trade with a baby villager?
No. Baby villagers do not trade. Wait about 20 minutes for them to grow up.

How do you protect villagers from zombies?
Light up the village, put fences or walls around it, and make an iron golem. Doors keep villagers safe except on Hard, where zombies break wooden doors.

Why do iron golems attack me?
Iron golems attack players who hurt villagers or have very bad reputation in the village. Golems you build yourself do not turn on you.

What does a bell do in a village?
Ringing a bell sends villagers indoors and makes nearby raiders glow. Bells are the village meeting point.

How do you move villagers?
Push them into a boat or minecart and move that, on rails or over land. Villagers cannot be put on a lead on either edition.
What happens if lightning hits a villager?
A villager struck by lightning turns into a witch.
How do villagers sleep?
Villagers go to bed at night. Each one claims a bed. If they cannot get to a bed they wander around.

What types of villages are there?

What is a zombie siege?
A zombie siege is a rare night event where many zombies spawn inside a village at once. Walls, lighting and doors keep villagers safe.

Why are there no villagers in my village?
It may be an abandoned (zombie) village, or the villagers were killed by zombies or raids. Cure zombie villagers to bring people back.
