Minecraft crashes, lag and FPS, answered
What to try when Minecraft crashes, lags or won't connect - from Mojang's own help centre, in plain steps.
Why does Minecraft keep crashing?
Usually outdated drivers or system software, too little free memory or storage, or mods and add-ons. Mojang's first fix is simple: sign out, restart your device and router, and relaunch.

How do you check why Minecraft crashed?
Open your game folder (the one set in your launcher installation) and look in the crash-reports folder. Each crash report is named after the time of the crash, so the newest file is your latest crash.
If there is no crash-reports folder, the Java Virtual Machine itself may have crashed - look for an hs_err_pid file in the game folder instead. The most common causes of crashes are mods, bugs, updates and running out of memory.

Why won't the Minecraft Launcher open?
On Windows, Mojang suggests running the Gaming Services Repair Tool, repairing the Minecraft Launcher app in Windows settings, and if that fails, reinstalling the launcher (back up your worlds first).
The launcher relies on the Microsoft Store app, so resetting the Microsoft Store cache can fix it too - including the "This App Can't Open" error.

What does "Pixel format not accelerated" mean in Minecraft?
Your graphics drivers or system software are out of date. Install your operating system's updates and the newest graphics driver from AMD, NVIDIA or Intel, then restart.

How much RAM should you give Minecraft Java?
Mojang's advice: with 4 GB of RAM or less in your computer, give Minecraft 2 GB; with 8 GB or more you can give it more. On a 64-bit system, half your RAM is the recommended maximum.
Change it in the Minecraft Launcher: Installations, edit the installation, More Options, and change -Xmx2G in the JVM arguments (for example to -Xmx4G). Copy the original arguments somewhere first so you can undo it. Since 26.1-snapshot-2 the default is 4 GB, so computers with less than 4 GB of RAM need it set back to 2 GB.

Do you need to download Java to play Minecraft Java Edition?
No. The official Minecraft Launcher automatically supplies the right Java version (the latest game needs Java 25), so you do not need to install Java yourself.
Recent versions do not run on 32-bit operating systems. A launcher installation can be pointed at a different Java executable if you need one.

How do you make Minecraft less laggy?
Close other programs, update your graphics drivers, lower your video settings and disable mods or add-ons. If the lag only happens online, fix your connection: stop other downloads and streams and move closer to your Wi-Fi router.
Mojang also suggests unplugging phones and tablets while playing, since they can slow down or overheat when charging.

How do you get more FPS in Minecraft Java?
Lower the demanding video settings, update your graphics drivers, close background programs and remove mods that slow the game. Performance mods such as Sodium or OptiFine raise frame rates further.

How do you get more FPS in Minecraft Bedrock?
In Settings, Video: lower the field of view below the default 60, turn off Fancy Leaves, Fancy Bubbles and clouds, and pick Simple graphics mode (the lightest). Vibrant Visuals uses the most resources.
How do you lower your ping in Minecraft?
Ping comes from your connection, so: pause other downloads, streams and devices on your network, move closer to your Wi-Fi router, check your internet speed, and make sure a firewall, antivirus or VPN is not slowing Minecraft down.

What is the max render distance in Minecraft Java?
32 chunks, as long as the game has at least 1 GB of memory (otherwise 16). Fewer chunks means each frame draws faster, so lowering render distance is one of the quickest FPS fixes.
On a server, how far you actually see is also limited by the server's view-distance setting (3 to 32, default 10). Simulation distance is a separate setting for how far mobs and blocks keep updating, and it costs more performance than render distance.

Why can't I connect to Minecraft multiplayer?
Check that you and the person you are playing with can open other websites, then look for something blocking Minecraft: a work or school network, a firewall, antivirus or VPN. Mojang lists ports 80, 443, 3748, 19132 and 19133 as the ones that need to be open.
If you changed your DNS settings, set them back to automatic; on PC you can also flush the DNS cache. Port-forwarding or VPN setups may need your router's NAT set to moderate or open.

What does "Multiplayer is disabled" mean in Minecraft?
Your account or platform is not allowed to play online yet. Update Minecraft first; then, on Bedrock, allow multiplayer for your Microsoft account (child-account settings - sometimes needed even on adult accounts), and on consoles make sure you have Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online.
If you are joining someone's world, the host also has to allow multiplayer in that world's settings.

Why can't I join my friend's Minecraft world?
A common cause is that one of you is on an older version - update both games and use the latest release, not a preview or snapshot. The host must also be online (Realms are the exception), and on Bedrock the world has to allow multiplayer.
Custom DNS settings or port setups can also block the connection, even when other games and websites work.

Why can't I use chat in Minecraft Java?
Your Microsoft account's Xbox privacy settings may block it. On the Xbox Settings website, under Privacy & online safety, an adult or parent account sets the communication options to Everyone; then sign out of Minecraft and restart.
In the United Kingdom, Microsoft accounts have to verify the owner's age, and chat may stay restricted until that is done.
