How many items does coal smelt?
One piece of coal or charcoal smelts 8 items in a furnace.
How many items does a block of coal smelt?
A block of coal smelts 80 items, more than the 72 that its 9 pieces of coal would smelt separately.

What is the best fuel in Minecraft?
A lava bucket smelts the most per item (100), and blocks of coal smelt 80. Dried kelp blocks (20 each) are the best renewable fuel for farms.

Do furnaces work when you are away?
Only while their chunk is loaded. A furnace in unloaded chunks pauses until a player comes back.
How do you get the XP from a furnace?
Take the smelted items out of the furnace yourself. Hoppers pulling items out do not give you the experience, but it is kept until a player removes something.
