Minecraft redstone questions, answered
Redstone is Minecraft's wiring. These answers cover how a signal travels, the parts you build with, and the machines people want to make first.
How far does redstone travel?
A redstone signal travels 15 blocks along redstone dust, getting one level weaker each block. A repeater boosts it back to full strength.

What is signal strength in redstone?
Signal strength is a power level from 0 to 15. Dust loses 1 per block, and comparators can read and compare strengths.
What gives off a redstone signal?
Power sources include levers, buttons, pressure plates, tripwire, redstone torches, redstone blocks, daylight sensors, observers and target blocks.
How do you make redstone go up?
Place redstone dust on blocks in a staircase, or use a tower of alternating torches and blocks. Observers and slabs also carry signals up.
What is quasi-connectivity?
On Java, pistons, droppers and dispensers can be powered by a signal one block above them. Bedrock does not have this.

Is redstone different on Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Java has quasi-connectivity and instant 0-tick pistons; Bedrock lets pistons push more things and has random delays in some parts. Many Java builds fail on Bedrock.
What is a redstone tick?
A redstone tick is 0.1 seconds, two game ticks. A repeater delays a signal by 1 to 4 redstone ticks.

How do you get redstone dust?
Mine redstone ore with an iron pickaxe or better. Each ore drops 4 to 5 dust. It is common deep underground.
Redstone ore is most common near the bottom of the world, below Y 15. Witches drop it and some villagers trade it.

What is a redstone block?
A block of redstone is crafted from 9 dust. It is a power source that is always on and pistons can move it.
What does a redstone torch do?
A redstone torch gives a constant signal. It turns off when the block it stands on is powered, which makes it a NOT gate.

How do you make a redstone torch?
Put one redstone dust above one stick in a crafting grid.

What is the difference between a piston and a sticky piston?
Both push blocks. A sticky piston also pulls the block back when it turns off. Craft it with a piston and a slimeball.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Sticky Piston
How many blocks can a piston push?
A piston pushes up to 12 blocks in a line. Obsidian, bedrock and some other blocks cannot be pushed at all.

What is a redstone lamp?
A redstone lamp is a light block that turns on when powered. Craft it from 4 redstone dust around a glowstone block.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Redstone Lamp
What does a dispenser do?
A dispenser shoots or uses items when powered: arrows, fire charges, water buckets, potions and more. A dropper only drops items.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Dispenser
How do you make a dispenser?
Craft 7 cobblestone around a bow with 1 redstone dust under the bow.

What is a tripwire hook?
Two tripwire hooks joined by string make a tripwire. Walking through the string sends a signal, which is good for traps.

What does a lectern do with redstone?
A lectern holding a book gives a short pulse each time a page is turned. A comparator reads the page number.

What is a sculk sensor?
A sculk sensor detects vibrations such as footsteps and sends a redstone signal. Sneaking does not set it off.

What is a copper bulb?
A copper bulb is a light that toggles on or off each time it gets a redstone pulse. A comparator can read whether it is lit.

What is a crafter in Minecraft?
The crafter is a redstone block that crafts an item when powered, using the recipe laid out in its 3 by 3 grid.

What is a redstone comparator used for?
Comparators read how full a container is, compare two signals, or subtract one from another. They are key to item sorters.
How do you make a piston door?
A basic 2 by 2 door uses four sticky pistons hidden in the walls, wired to a lever or pressure plates so they pull back to open.

How do you make a redstone clock?
Join a repeater loop back into itself, or use an observer facing another observer. A clock sends pulses again and again.
Observer clocks are fast. Repeater loops let you set the speed. Clocks cause lag, so turn them off when not needed.

How do you make a T flip-flop?
A T flip-flop turns one button press into on, then off on the next press. A copper bulb does this alone in recent versions.

How do you make an elevator in Minecraft?
The simplest elevator is a water column: soul sand at the bottom pushes you up and magma blocks pull you down.
Redstone flying machines and piston elevators exist, but the bubble column is the easy one.

How do you make an item sorter?
A row of hoppers with comparators reads each item filter. When a filter hopper fills past its setting it lets that item through.

How do you make an automatic farm with redstone?
Observers watch crops or sugar cane and fire pistons when the plant grows. Hoppers under the farm collect the drops.

How do you make a flying machine?
A flying machine uses observers, sticky pistons and slime or honey blocks that push each other along. It moves until it hits something.

How do you make a combination lock?
Use item frames: a comparator reads an item frame's rotation, and only the right rotations power the door. Many designs exist.

How do you make a doorbell?
Put a button by your door and wire it to a note block inside. Pressing the button plays the note.

What is a pulse extender?
A pulse extender keeps a short signal on for longer, so a quick button press can hold a door or lamp open.

How do you make a TNT launcher?
TNT cannons push lit TNT with water and timed explosions. Build them in a test world; they can wreck things.

How do you make an automatic door with pressure plates?
Put a pressure plate on each side of an iron door. Standing on either plate opens it, stepping off closes it.

How do you make a trapdoor open with redstone?
Power the trapdoor with a lever, button or redstone line. Iron trapdoors only open with redstone.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Trapdoor
Does redstone dust work in water?
No. Flowing water washes redstone dust away and drops it as an item. Keep wiring dry or use waterlogged slabs to block water.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Redstone Dust
How do you stop redstone dust from connecting?
Place a block or a repeater between lines, or right-click a dust line that points nowhere on Java to switch it between a dot and a cross.

What is wireless redstone in Minecraft?
Vanilla has no real wireless redstone, but sculk sensors and calibrated sculk sensors can pick up vibrations and pass signals without wires.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Sculk Sensor, Minecraft Wiki - Calibrated Sculk Sensor
What does a calibrated sculk sensor do?
A calibrated sculk sensor listens only for one kind of vibration. Power its input side with a chosen signal strength to pick which kind.
What instrument does a note block play?
It depends on the block under it: wood gives a bass, sand a snare, glass clicks, stone a bass drum, gold a bell and so on.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Note Block
What is a BUD switch?
A block update detector (BUD) sends a pulse when a block next to it changes. Observers do this job in modern versions.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Observer
What was zero-tick farming?
Zero-tick farms used a Java piston bug to grow plants instantly. Mojang fixed it in 1.16, so they no longer work.
How do you make an item elevator?
Put soul sand under a column of water: items and players float up the bubble column. Droppers chained upward also work; hoppers cannot push items up.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Bubble Column, Minecraft Wiki - Dropper, Minecraft Wiki - Hopper
How do you make an automatic smelter?
Hoppers above feed items into a furnace, a hopper on the side feeds fuel, and a hopper below collects the results.
How do you make a hopper clock?
Two hoppers face each other with comparators reading them. Items pass back and forth, turning the signal on and off on a timer.

What is a monostable circuit?
A monostable circuit turns any input into one short pulse, useful to trigger pistons or droppers once.
Source: Minecraft Wiki - Pulse
How do you make a redstone signal last longer?
Chain repeaters set to longer delays, or use a pulse extender built from repeaters, comparators or droppers.
