Realms are Mojang's own always-online servers for you and your friends. These answers cover how they work beyond the basics in the Multiplayer FAQ.
What are the Java Realms plans?
Java Realms comes as a monthly subscription that renews every 30 days, or as one-time packs of 30, 90 or 180 days. Both allow up to 10 players.

Do you need to own Minecraft to join a Realm?
Yes. Players need the full game and a Microsoft account. Only the owner pays for the Realm.

Is a Realm always online?
Yes. A Realm runs on Mojang's servers, so friends can join any time, even when the owner is offline.

How many worlds can a Realm have?
A Realm stores up to three worlds, and one is active at a time. Java Realms also have a spare slot for minigames.

Does a Realm make backups?
Yes. Java Realms back up automatically every few hours while players are online. Bedrock saves at the end of each session and every 30 minutes.

How do you restore a Realm backup?
Open the Realm's settings, choose the backup and replace the world slot with it, or download it as a singleplayer world.

What are Realms minigames?
On Java, Realm owners can load premade minigame maps into a temporary slot. Minigames do not save progress and reset when everyone leaves.

What version does a Realm run?
A Realm always runs the latest stable release. Every subscription also includes a separate Realm for Java snapshots or Bedrock Preview.

What is Realms Stories?
Realms Stories was a Bedrock feature where Realm members posted comments and screenshots. Bedrock 26.20 replaced it with the Realms Hub.

Can you install plugins on a Realm?
No. Realms run vanilla Minecraft only. For plugins you need your own server or a hosting company.
Can you play Hardcore on a Realm?
Yes. Upload an existing Hardcore world to the Realm; on Java 1.21.2+ you can also create a Hardcore world on a Realm.
How do you reset a Realm world?
In the Realm settings choose to reset or replace the world, then generate a new world or upload one.
