Minecraft village raid questions, answered
Raids are waves of illagers that attack a village. Here is how they start, how many waves to expect and how to win, on Java and Bedrock.
What is Raid Omen?
Raid Omen is the effect Bad Omen turns into when you enter a village. When it runs out, the raid begins. Milk cancels it.

How do you stop a raid from starting?
Drink milk while you have Bad Omen or Raid Omen to remove the effect before the raid begins.
Can raids happen without villagers?
A raid needs a village: on Java, a bed, job site or bell claimed by a villager. With no villagers or claimed blocks there is no village to raid.

Can raids happen in the Nether?
Not on Java. Raids can start in any dimension except the Nether on Java Edition.

How do you turn off raids?
On Java, set the game rule raids to false: /gamerule raids false. Older Java versions used disableRaids.
How many waves are in a Minecraft raid?
3 waves on Easy, 5 on Normal and 7 on Hard. On Java, Raid Omen level II or higher adds one more wave.

What mobs come in a raid?
Pillagers, vindicators, evokers, witches and ravagers. Vexes come from evokers, and some illagers ride ravagers.

Why are there no evokers in my raid?
Evokers only show up in later waves on Normal and Hard. Easy raids are shorter and do not include them.

How do you find the last raider?
Ring a bell: nearby raiders glow so you can see them through walls. The raid bar also shows how many are left.
Do raiders break doors?
Vindicators in raids can break wooden doors on Hard (and sometimes Normal) when they cannot open them.
Why does the raid keep going?
The next wave spawns until all waves are beaten. A raider stuck far away or in a hole still counts, so find it with a bell.

How do you win a raid?
Kill every raider in the final wave. Villagers come out and launch fireworks, and the raid bar shows Victory.

What happens if you lose a raid?
If every villager dies or the village loses all its beds, bells and job blocks, the raid ends in defeat and the raiders celebrate.

Do raids give totems of undying?
Yes. Evokers in raids drop a totem of undying when killed, so Normal and Hard raids are a reliable totem source.

How do you get a stronger Bad Omen?
Ominous bottles come in levels I to V. A higher level makes raids harder, with better-enchanted gear on raiders.

Do pillagers keep spawning at an outpost?
Yes. Pillagers and captains keep spawning around an outpost over time, even with a player inside the tower.
On Java they spawn in a 72 by 58 by 72 area around the tower's top floor, on opaque blocks with block light 8 or less.
How do you stop pillagers spawning at an outpost?
On Java, light up the spawn area to block light 9 or more, or cover the ground with blocks mobs cannot spawn on, such as slabs or glass.

How do you make a pillager outpost farm?
Build a dark platform inside the outpost's spawn area so pillagers spawn there and fall into a kill spot. Captains drop ominous bottles.
How do you get ominous bottles?
Kill a pillager captain, the one carrying a banner. It drops an ominous bottle of level I to V.

How rare are pillager outposts?
Outposts generate every several hundred to a couple of thousand blocks: rarer than villages, more common than woodland mansions.
Are there iron golems at pillager outposts?
Sometimes. An outpost can have cages holding an iron golem or two allays, generated with the structure.
