Minecraft potions and brewing, answered

Every common potion recipe, with durations, from the Minecraft Wiki.

Brewing basics

How do you brew potions in Minecraft?

Put water bottles in a brewing stand fuelled with blaze powder, add Nether wart to make awkward potions, then add an ingredient for the effect you want.

Most potions start from an awkward potion. Full charts are in the brewing guide.

How do you make a splash potion?

Add gunpowder to a finished potion in the brewing stand. A splash potion is thrown and affects everything in the area it lands.

Adding dragon's breath to a splash potion makes a lingering potion that leaves a cloud.

What are the potion ingredients in Minecraft?

Add one of these to an awkward potion: sugar (Swiftness), rabbit's foot (Leaping), glistering melon slice (Healing), spider eye (Poison), blaze powder (Strength), golden carrot (Night Vision), ghast tear (Regeneration), pufferfish (Water Breathing), magma cream (Fire Resistance), turtle shell (Turtle Master), phantom membrane (Slow Falling).

Newer ingredients are breeze rod (Wind Charged), stone (Infested), cobweb (Weaving) and slime block (Oozing). Then redstone dust makes a potion last longer, glowstone dust makes it stronger, and a fermented spider eye turns it into its opposite (for example Healing into Harming). Fermented spider eye on a plain water bottle makes Weakness.

How do you make tipped arrows in Minecraft?

Put 8 arrows around one lingering potion in a crafting table to get 8 tipped arrows with that potion's effect. To make a lingering potion, add dragon's breath to a splash potion.

So yes, you need dragon's breath: catch it in empty glass bottles from the Ender Dragon's breath attack or its purple clouds. On Java, fletchers can also give tipped arrows to a player with Hero of the Village.
